The Heart of a Mom & an Educator

I fondly remember the time that I looked at my 4 year old coloring at the table and thought, "Why can't I just homeschool him?" We had sat so often at his little table learning the alphabet, coloring, even doing some workbook pages together. My heart was heavy with the weight of sending him off for hours each day to kindergarten in the not so distant future. At that point, it dawned on me. I was just as capable to teach my own child, as any teacher in the state. Here I was with a double teaching certificate and college degrees that proved I was able. After much discussion, we set our minds to homeschooling.

As months, and years have gone by, my thoughts towards education came into clearer focus. I delved into many theories & ideas, some I gravitated towards, others I just liked learning about. One of the biggest changes in my thinking has been regarding who can homeschool.

It has never been a secret how most teachers believe they are the only people who can actually teach. I unfortunately fell into that trap of thinking. But as I traveled the road of homeschooling those thoughts began to change. I saw mom (even dad's) teaching their children who had college degrees, others who only graduated from high school. What I discovered was that no matter the educational background, the one characteristic that stood out was the LOVE they had for their children. That love transcended their knowledge. That love pushed them to research and find multiple ways to teach their children. That love pushed them to learn along side their children.

This is why I write. I want to encourage anyone who truly feels like homeschooling is the past to take. YOU are capable of being the teacher your child needs. Let's go on this journey together!
